My grandmother was born in the 1820s, a time of material scarcity, and children rarely had new clothes or shoes. If anyone’s child wore a new fur coat or vest, they would be envied by the children around them for a long time. My grandmother grew up under the envy of others and started learning crochet. She lived frugally, picking up broken glass to exchange for pocket money, and then buying the money into yarn. At that time, anyone who could afford yarn would also be envied by others for a long time. She recalled that she really wanted to give her first sweater to her own mother, but by then her mother had already passed away. Later on, my grandmother relied on this craft to support my mother and a large family. She worked during the day and earned a meager living allowance by knitting sweaters, vests, hats, and scarves under dim oil lamps at night. If we talk about crochet skills, all of my aunts have received a true pass from my grandmother, and my mother is considered not very smart. In my grandmother’s words, she barely became a master.

Later on, living standards improved, and there were more and more styles and patterns of clothes. Machines could also produce beautiful sweaters, hats, and scarves. Gradually, no one asked grandma to knit sweaters or scarves anymore. Fortunately, at that time, life was getting better and it no longer needed my grandmother’s hard work, but she was a restless person. She tried to crochet the small flowers and animals that she had previously crocheted on a sweater separately, and the results were shocking. Each one was lifelike, and her crocheting works began to be welcomed by people around her, and more and more people began to learn crocheting skills from her. I officially started learning with her when I was 9 or 10 years old. She had asked me to learn crochet many times before, but I refused on the grounds of boredom. When I really picked up crochet to learn crochet, I found that it is really something worth fully focusing on, and it will make you unconsciously immersed in it. I actually started working as a crochet worker after I graduated from college. At that time, the employment situation was tight and the work pressure was high. I worried about being laid off every day and became anxious. Gradually, I started to lose sleep and couldn’t sleep all night. My grandmother learned about my situation from my mother and called me to ask if the crochet hook she gave you was still there? I told her it’s been there all along, and she said, when you can’t sleep, take it out and crochet a small flower, and try crocheting a little dog. The moment I picked up the crochet hook again, my heart began to calm down. From then on, after work, I would crochet for half an hour. Gradually, my anxiety improved and my work became smoother and smoother. Later, during a phone call with my grandmother, I learned that she said this craft is probably going to be lost slowly. Young people don’t like to learn it and find it tedious. Nowadays, there are a wide variety of products, and handmade crochet products have no advantages. At that moment, I decided that I wanted to pass on this skill, so I resigned and began to devote myself wholeheartedly to it. My grandmother was very happy and elected me as the leader of the team. All actions were under my command. She believed that I would do this well, and I also believed that as long as I worked hard, I could do it.

Now, my 9-year-old daughter has also joined my team. She loves drawing and asked me to turn her artwork into crochet products. I said it seemed like there were difficulties, but she told me to solve them. My 3-year-old daughter cries out every day for me to crochet a rainbow for her. Because of her nagging, I have inspiration for rainbow series products. In the past, crochet products were too single in color, but in the future, products will be colorful.
